Student/Early Career Opportunities & Events

Student Pub crawl

Sunday, 10 June 2018 - 21:00

This is the Conference Kickoff for students! Drink specials will be offered at different bars and establishments near the Victoria Conference Centre. Come make memories with the students who will be at the meeting! Starting at 21:00 immediately following the opening mixer. The group will gather and will leave right after.

Social Mixers

Informal social mixers for students and early career professionals will be held Monday evening following the ASLO Business Meeting. Beverages and snacks will be served, and drink tickets will be available at the door (soft drinks and limited alcoholic beverages). All students and early career professionals are welcome and encouraged to attend their respective mixers.

Workshops

There will be student and early career workshops during the meeting. Potential topics will focus on career development (e.g., publication and grant writing, communicating science, different career paths, etc.) A limited number of lunches will be available to those who attend the workshops. Further details about these workshops will be provided later.

Early Career Workshop

Effective Publishing and Review Strategies

Wednesday, 13 June 2018 - 12:30 to 14:00 - Oak Bay I and II

This will be round table discussion on the topics of effective publishing and reviewing strategies, both of which are important for building up a career. A limited number of lunches will be available to those who attend. Further details about this workshop will be provided later.

Publish Me, Please!

Tuesday, 12 June 2018 - 12:30 to 14:00 - Saanich I and II

A panel of editors and reviewers will share what they are looking for when accepting submissions to their journals. Box lunches will be provided on a first come, first served basis for students who participate in this workshop.

Panel participants include Pat Soranno, Paul Kemp, Stephanie Hampton, Paul Montagna, and John Downing.

How to ASK so that you shall RECEIVE

Thursday, 14 June 2018 - 12:30 to 14:00 - Saanich I and II

A panel of senior scientists from the public and private sectors will provide insight on how to negotiate salary and other helpful job tips for upcoming graduates.  Box lunches will be provided on a first come, first served basis for students who participate in this workshop.

Panel participants include Amina Pollard, Jim Elser, Grace Wilkinson, and Jennifer Cherrier.
