The Ecosystems and Global Change Group led by Dr Andrew Tanentzap at the University of Cambridge (www.ecosystemchange.com) is seeking a full-time Research Assistant (RA). The RA will join an exciting new ERC-funded project investigating the ecological and evolutionary importance of molecular diversity in dissolved organic matter of European lakes. The post must start between February and March 2019.
The goal of the position is to manage and deliver a survey of microbial communities and dissolved organic matter in 100 lakes spanning the entire extent of Europe during the 2019 growing season.
Successful experience with project and team management is a must. The postholder will possess a biological subject qualification to A-level standard at a minimum and a clean driving licence. They will have experience sampling water quality, practical knowledge of both field and lab equipment, basic data management skills, and the ability to operate boats in a safe environment. It is also an occupational requirement for the successful applicant to be able to drive due to the remote locations of fieldwork.
Experience working for extended periods in remote locations often under physically challenging conditions (i.e. cold and wet) is highly desirable. The postholder should also be comfortable on the open water, and possess or be willing to acquire first aid and other safety training. You will be responsible for coordinating safety of the group whilst in the field.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 8 months in the first instance.
