Tenure/Tenure Track Professor in Biochemistry (closes 1/11/2019)

Two Tenure/Tenure Track Faculty Positions in BIOCHEMISTRY

The State University of New York - College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF), invites applications for two academic-year, tenure-track Biochemistry positions to be located in the Department of Chemistry (FCH). The first position is at the level of Assistant Professor. The level of the second position is open (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor). We are seeking biochemists with interests in biochemistry as related to the environment, who will contribute to expanding undergraduate and graduate programs in biochemistry, environmental chemistry, natural products chemistry, renewable materials/biopolymer chemistry, and environmental health.

Responsibilities: The successful candidates will develop an extramurally funded and internationally recognized research program complemented with strong teaching. The field of research is open within the broader field of environmental biochemistry. Teaching responsibilities will include participation in either of two undergraduate lecture courses required for the biochemistry major (FCH 430/432), an upper division biochemistry laboratory course, as well as a graduate level course in the candidate’s area of expertise. Professional and public service is expected. Candidates should engage with faculty and students in other disciplines at ESF and with colleagues at Syracuse University, Upstate Medical University and the broader academic community. Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in research is essential as is the development of a strong extramurally funded research program.

Required Qualifications for the Assistant Professorship level:
• Ph.D. with postdoctoral or similar experience in biochemistry or related field.
• Candidates must place a high value on both research and teaching.

Additional Required Qualifications for the Associate and Full Professorship level:
• Must have academic experience in biochemistry commensurate with the level to
which they are applying.
• Candidates must have demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding for their

Application Instructions: Application materials must be submitted on-line at http://www.esf.edu/hr/ and should include: (1) cover letter summarizing qualifications and interest in the position. This letter must clearly state if they are to be considered at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) statement of research interests and experience (3 page limit), (4) statement of teaching philosophy and experience (2 page limit), and (5) the names of three or more professional references.

Application Deadline: To ensure optimal consideration, all application materials must be received by January 11th, 2019; however these positions will remain open until filled.

The Department, College, and Faculty: These positions are within the Department of Chemistry at SUNY-ESF (www.esf.edu/chemistry). The department has 16 faculty, 40 graduate students and 65 undergraduate chemistry or biochemistry majors. In addition, the department supports additional programs on campus including programs in Environmental Health, Biotechnology, Bioprocess Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Environmental and Forest Biology.

ESF is dedicated to solving environmental problems through research, teaching and service. ESF provides an intimate small-college atmosphere with a low student/faculty ratio that allows for personal attention and assistance for students. ESF is one of nine Ph.D. granting institutions within the 64 college/university SUNY system. Integration of research and teaching is emphasized and the college has a strong undergraduate research program where undergraduate students regularly work with graduate students and faculty. ESF has nine regional campuses/field stations and maintains nearly 25,000 acres of forest properties offering excellent opportunities for field-based research. Access to chemical instrumentation (http://www.esf.edu/ats/ ) on the campus is excellent. The ESF campus is adjacent to Syracuse University and close to SUNY Upstate Medical University. The Syracuse Veterans Administration Hospital, Upstate Medical University Hospital, Crouse Hospital and Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital are within walking distance from ESF, and offer extensive research and collaborative opportunities for health-related projects. The University Hill community provides students and faculty with the resources of large institutions of higher education, including a wide array of courses, computer and library facilities, and sports and health services.
