Research Positions at the School of Marine Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University

Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen and with an educational tradition spanning over 100 years, is a preeminent research, academic and cultural center and the premier location for talent development in South China. Under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and strongly supported by both the Ministry and Guangdong Province, SYSU has developed into a modern comprehensive university that enjoys a reputation as a top-tier university nationally and a renowned university internationally. With five campuses in three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, and ten affiliated hospitals, the university is striving to become a world-class university and global center of learning.

SMS at SUSY stands on beautiful coast in Zhuhai bordering Hong Kong and Macau. Zhuhai Campus (covering an area over 3.3 square kilometers) has been designated to receive the priority of developing big marine science groups. SYSU is constructing an ocean-going research vessel (6,000 tons), and already has the super computer, “Milky Way-2”. Recently, SYSU is taking initiatives in building the provincial laboratory: South China Sea Institute and the state of arts marine laboratory in the world, attracting top scientists so as to advance the core technologies and training better technicians.

The following positions are available and remains open till filled.

Postdoctoral scholar, distinguished research fellow, and distinguished associated research fellow

Applications are being accepted for full-time research positions at postdoctoral scholar, distinguished research fellow, and distinguished associated research fellow levels at the School of Marine Sciences (SMS), Sun Yat-sen University, China. The successful applicants will work with Dr. Jun Zhao focusing on remote sensing of the marine environment and collaborate with researchers from different marine-related disciplines. The duties include proposal and project report writing, field investigation, data analysis, paper publication in highly-ranked journals, and presenting results at international conferences. Positions are available immediately and will be funded for an initial period of three years with a possibility for extension pending acceptable performance.

Doctorate degree in remote sensing, oceanography, or closely relevant fields.
Familiarity with satellite data processing using both software and self-written codes, and algorithm development.
Great programing skills with Matlab, IDL, Python, Perl, or shell scripts.
Capability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary research circumstance, plus motivation to conduct autonomous research.
Excellent English writing and speaking skills.
Post-doctoral experiences are required for distinguished (associate) research fellow.

Salaries are commensurate with experience and qualification.
Postdoctoral scholar level: 200,000 RMB + allowance at the Zhuhai campus between 30,000 – 36,000 RMB. Applicants are also encouraged to apply for other programs for postdoc, such as “International Exchange Program for Postdoc”, “Innovation Talent Program for Postdoc”, “Xiangjiang Scholar Program” and “Zhujiang Talent Program”.
Distinguished associate research fellow: 190,000 – 250,000 RMB + allowance at the Zhuhai campus between 30,000 – 36,000 RMB.
Distinguished research fellow: 300,000 – 360,000 RMB + allowance at the Zhuhai campus between 30,000 – 36,000 RMB.
Promotions to faculty levels of associate and full professor are possible pending excellent performance and qualification.
