Postdoctoral Position in Marine Microbial Ecology (open until filled)

Postdoctoral Scholar Position, Mason Lab, Florida State University

The Mason Lab at Florida State University is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to participate in a large-scale effort to study and develop new methods of simulating the interactions between microbes and oil. This position is part of the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative’s Consortium for Simulation of Oil-Microbial Interactions in the Ocean (CSOMIO). CSOMIO scientists will use recent model developments and results from field- and laboratory-based microbial and sediment studies. As part of CSOMIO the primary responsibility of the postdoctoral scholar will be to use bioinformatics analyses of ‘omic’ datasets. These analyses will provide the input for a novel emergent properties modeling approach that simulates both abundance and transcription rates for genetic pathways involved in hydrocarbon degradation. These simulations will allow CSOMIO scientists to investigate the impacts of potential future oil spills under different scenarios and conditions.

A successful candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. in a related field, have carried out research in marine microbial ecology using bioinformatics analyses of ‘omic’ datasets, have the ability to write python and/or perl scripts and have a strong publication record. Interested candidates should send a single pdf with a cover letter, CV, representative publication and the names of three references to Dr. Olivia Mason at omason@fsu.edu. More information about the Mason Lab can be found at https://www.oumasonlab.com/. The anticipated start date for this position is January 2018. Applications are being accepted beginning November 2017.
