We are looking for volunteers to staff our exhibit at the 2018 USA Science and Engineering Festival on April 6-8 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. This is a BIG HUGE event and we are excited to continue our tradition of participating by representing the aquatic sciences and providing outreach to the public. ASLO has participated in every occurrence of this extraordinary, biennial event. Over 365,000 people attended the most recent festival in 2016. As in prior years, ASLO will team up with our fellow aquatic science societies to sponsor a booth through the Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies; the other societies participating in the CASS booth are the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation, the Phycological Society of America, the Society for Freshwater Sciences and Society of Wetland Scientists.
Our member organizations have collected resources for an “Aquatic Sciences” booth with various activities including building models of plankton, interacting with aquatic insects, dressing up as an aquatic scientist for a photo booth, visualizations about the world's water resources and getting a little messy creating alginate gel beads. These are easy activities to guide kids through and you will be provided with training at the event, as well as a CASS t-shirt. (Note, this is the ONLY way to get your hands on these coveted CASS items!)
The festival is an excellent opportunity to share your experience as an aquatic scientists and speak directly to people of all ages about aquatic ecosystems. In 2016, nearly 2,000 people visited the CASS booth over the three day festival! We are looking for volunteers to help staff the CASS exhibit and speak with the public for 2-4 hour shifts. Limited funding may be available to accommodate participants coming in from out of town. To get an idea of what the Festival is like, see this recap of the 2016 Festival in the L&O Bulletin.
