ASLO Student/DIALOG Mixer Reception
Date: Monday, 20 June 2005
Time: 14:00 – 15:15
Room: Palacio de Congresos - Obradoiro Hall, Break-out #3
Let’s socialize! This is an opportunity for undergraduate/graduate
students, recent graduates and former DIALOG symposium participants
to mix and mingle in a relaxed atmosphere. There will be brief
presentations to describe the DIALOG program (see http://aslo.org/phd.html)
and introduce peers and near-peers with professional and collegial
experience that might be of interest to you. The emphasis, however,
will be on giving you all a chance to interact with one another
to discuss your experiences, ask questions, and gain colleagues.
Collectively, the group will span disciplines, career/educational
levels, and interests…all within the same general age range!
Refreshments will be available. Please come and enjoy!
ASLO Student Forums
Date: Tuesday, 21 June 2005
Time: 13:45 – 15:00
Rooms: Palacio de Congresos Rooms: 8/9 (Break-out Room #4), 10
(Break-out Room #5), 13/14 (Break-out Room #6), 15/16 (Break-out
Room #7). 23/25 (Break-out Room #8)
Due to the success at the last meeting, ASLO Student Forums will
be taking place again at the ASLO 2005 Summer Meeting. Six established
ASLO scientists have agreed to chair separate discussion groups
for students to discuss recent developments, their own research
and future perspectives. The discussion forums will act as an "ice-breaker" for
students who may otherwise not approach more senior/established
researchers during ASLO conferences. The emphasis should be on
the informal nature of the forums, and participation of all parties
in the discussion is highly encouraged. The Student Forums will
take place on Tuesday during the lunch break and a light lunch
will be provided. More information will be provided at a later
date.
Outstanding Student Poster Awards
ASLO will present several awards for the most outstanding posters
presented by student members. Posters in all areas of aquatic
science are appropriate, including theory, modeling, and laboratory
or field experimentation. To be eligible, the student must be
an ASLO member and first author on research that has not been
presented previously at ASLO or other scientific meetings. Presentations
will be judged on the basis of innovation/scientific insight,
quality of experimental design/methods, and clarity/effectiveness
of presentation. All posters submitted by student members will
be considered for the student poster awards. There is no need
to apply.
Student posters will be judged during the poster sessions. Posters
that are not in place by the start of the session will not be eligible
for awards and will not be judged.
Career Link Program
Prospective employers and supervisors are invited to post job announcements
free of charge at the conference. Positions advertised on the
ASLO web site will be printed out and posted. In addition, advertisements
can be sent to Letise Houser at lthouser@udel.edu,
who will ensure they are posted for viewing during the meeting.
Likewise, students are invited to post one-page resumes for viewing.
Electronic versions of ads and resumes will be distributed free
of charge after the meeting. These can be faxed to: +1-254-776-3767.
To learn more about the Career Link Program, please go to the
following page on the ASLO web site: http://www.aslo.org/career/careerlink.html.
Volunteers Needed for Poster Judging
Post docs and professionals who are members of ASLO are invited
to serve as poster judges. Each judge will be responsible for
evaluating up to 10 posters on one of the three individual poster
session days: Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Please indicate
your area of expertise and interest in serving as a volunteer
by sending an e-mail to: Colin Stedmon at cst@dmu.dk.
Roommates Wanted
Roommates Wanted is a free online service to those who are seeking
roommates during ASLO’s meetings. To participate, visit
ASLO’s web site at http://www.aslo.org/meetings/roommates.html.
