Scientific Committee on Oceanographic Research (SCOR)
Working Group 126 on Role of Viruses in Marine Ecosystems Kick-Off
Meeting
Date: Monday, 20 June 2005
Time: 13:45 – 15:00
Location: Palacio de Congresos – Room #15/16, Break-out Room

SCOR is the leading non-governmental organization for the promotion
and coordination of international oceanographic activities. SCOR
science activities focus on promoting international cooperation
in planning and conducting oceanographic research, and solving
methodological and conceptual problems that hinder research. Among
the planned tasks in WG 126 are:
- Coordinate data collection to assess the role of viruses in
different water masses.
- Assess the methodological limitations of the techniques available
for quantifying the virus-mediated mortality of microorganisms
(eukaryotes and prokaryotes) and their impact on carbon and nutrient
cycling, and make recommendations for the best available approaches
to study viruses and viral processes in the sea.
- Establish and maintain a Web site as a forum that can be used
by the "viral community" for exchange of data and ideas
and future plans.
- Write a "definitive" textbook on Methods in Marine
Virology.
It is the aim of the aim of the kick-off meeting to start planning
and organizing these tasks in more detail.
ASLO-SIL Discussion on Future Cooperation
Date: Tuesday, 21 June 2005
Time: 14:00 – 15:00
Location: Palacio de Congresos – Obradoiro Hall, Break-out
Room #3
The American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) and the
International Society for Theoretical and Applied Limnology (SIL)
have much in common. They are the two largest scientific societies
in the world with a major interest in the study of inland waters.
While the missions, compositions and governance of these two societies
are quite different; much good could come from some greater synergism
and coordination between these two societies and with other regional
societies. This meeting is designed to explore the areas of intersection
between SIL, ASLO and other limnological societies (for example,
the Brazilian Limnological Society, the Canadian Limnological Society,
etc.) to see what we can do collectively that would benefit limnological
science and the condition of inland waters.
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Town Hall Meeting
Date: Wednesday, 22 June 2005
Time: 14:00 – 15:00
Location: Palacio de Congresos – Room #8/9, Break-out Room
#4
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (GBMF, www.moore.org) is
a non-profit organization that has recently launched a 10 year/$145M
initiative in marine microbiology. There are four components to
the initiative; single investigator awards, high impact science,
interdisciplinary research, and undergraduate research fellows.
Though GBMF does not accept unsolicited proposals, we are soliciting
community input for our high impact research activities. Community
input at the Ocean Research Conference held in February 2004, resulted
in the Marine Microbial Genome Sequencing Project (www.moore.org/micorgenome).
We are open to suggestions for similar, large-scale activities
of direct benefit to the marine microbiological community. All
are welcome to attend. A light lunch will be served. Please contact
Lita Proctor via e-mail at Lita.Proctor@moore.org for
more information on this town hall session.
