Dear all,

The joint EGS/AGU/EUG meeting in Nice, Italy (April 6-11, 2003) is an
historic convergence of these three societies--visit the meeting
website for details:
http://www.copernicus.org/egsagueug/index.html
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the different societies,
visit their websites at
European Geophysical Society
        http://www.copernicus.org/EGS/EGS.html
American Geophysical Union
        http://agu.org
European Geosciences Union
        http://www.copernicus.org/EGU/EGU.html

In addition to the awesome array of science sessions which are the
hallmark of these three societies, there will be several
outstandingly innovative sessions on geoscience education. Since
DIALOG/DISCCRS is an international list, I thought it appropriate to
highlight this one:

>>>Educating Geoscientists Around the World: A Diversity of Models
>>>
>>>Co-conveners: Cathy Manduca, Carleton College and Eystein
>>>Husebye, Universitetet i Bergen
>>> Geosocientists play a critical role in workforces providing research
>>>and expertise essential for addressing global and local
>>>environmental issues. This session will showcase the wide variety of
>>>approaches that are taken to prepare geoscientists in colleges and
>>>universities around the world. Speakers will highlight the strengths
>>>and concerns of their programs in areas as broad as the structure of
>>>degree programs; the role of an earth system approach, undergraduate
>>>research experiences, inquiry based learning, internet technology;
>>>relationships between undergraduate and graduate programs; and
>>>international exchange of students and early career scientists.

The organizers would particularly like help reaching appropriate
speakers from countries beyond the US. Any help that you can provide
in spreading the word about this session will be most appreciated.

The abstract deadline is Jan 15. There is a competition for travel
awards for young presenters with a deadline for Dec 1.
***If you know of appropriate presenters from countries outside the
US and Europe who might need travel funds to participate, please
contact Cathy Manduca at cmanduca@carleton.edu as soon as possible
with these suggestions.***

If you have any questions about the session, you can contact organizers
      Cathy Manduca
   or
      Eystein Husebye eystein@ifjf.uib.no

I hope to see many of you at the meeting--

cheers, sue
