      The Young Scientists' Global Change Conference offers a prestigious
platform for young scientists to present their research findings to
leading scientists in the field. It is intended to stimulate
competition, encourage excellence, reward outstanding performance, and
encourage the development of personal and institutional networks. Awards
will be presented for most outstanding contributions, including the
Crutzen Award for Best Paper. Furthermore, distinguished invited keynote
speakers will give plenary presentations. The language of the conference
is English. In order to facilitate the organization of the conference,
please return the attached Expression of Interest Form by the end of
November 2002.
      Call for Papers
Submissions of papers and posters are invited from young scientists (age
35 years or less) on the physical, biological and human aspects of
global change. Abstracts not exceeding 300 words are due on Friday 14
March 2003. Selection of papers and posters shall be on the basis of
scientific excellence, taking into account the need to achieve a
thematic and regional balance. Those not selected to make oral
presentations may be offered poster presentations. Authors will be
expected to publish their papers in international journals.
      Abstract submissions should include a title and authors' names and
affiliations, and must be accompanied by a brief curriculum vitae,
including institution, contact details, age, qualifications, research,
and publications of the presenting young scientist. Abstracts and CV's
should be submitted to:

ASLO PUBLIC POLICY REPRESENTATIVE POSITION

LOCATION: Headquarters of the American Institute of Biological 
Sciences (AIBS), in Washington D.C.
REPORTING TO: AIBS Director of Public Policy Adrienne Froelich
QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced scientific degree in the biological 
sciences, plus two or more years of professional public policy 
experience. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
required. Preference will be given to individuals with a working 
knowledge of the federal budget and appropriations process.
GENERAL: Public Policy Representative for the nonprofit scientific 
organization, the American Institute of Biological Sciences 
(www.aibs.org). The successful candidate will be a broadly trained 
scientist with demonstrated effectiveness in public policy circles. 
The individual will join the AIBS Public Policy Office to track, 
analyze, report, and act upon legislative, regulatory, and other 
public policy issues in the U.S. Subject areas cover most areas of 
non-medical biology, including funding for research and science 
education policy.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
1. Represent the members of AIBS in the public policy arena to 
promote the use of scientific information in decisions pertaining to

branch reports, and other government events and actions. Draft public

WETLANDS ECOLOGIST POSITION
       San Francisco State University's Department of Biology and the
Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies, a field campus of
SFSU located on San Francisco Bay, seek candidates for a tenure-track
Assistant Professorship in Wetlands Ecology.
       We seek an individual who can complement the research and
teaching interests of the Center's and Department's rapidly expanding
staff. The position is broadly defined at both organismal (plants,
invertebrates, vertebrates) and organizational (individual,
population, community) levels. Interactions with conservation and
restoration ecology programs are strongly encouraged, as are research
interests in San Francisco Bay. San Francisco Bay contains the
state's largest concentration of wetlands and the State of California
has mandated the conservation and restoration of many wetland
habitats.
       Ph.D. required and postdoctoral experience preferred. Applicants
are expected to maintain externally funded research that involves
students working toward Masters degrees and to contribute to the

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN PALEOCLIMATOLOGY, CANADA
     The recently formed Environmental Earth Sciences Research 
Laboratory at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia invites 
applications for a two year Post Doctoral fellowship research 
position on paleoclimatology, centered on, but not limited to past 
climate reconstructions from borehole temperature data, including 
modeling of the air/ground coupling and joint analysis of proxy and 
direct paleoclimatic indicators. The position is funded by grants

ROSALIND FRANKLIN FELLOWSHIPS, THE NETHERLANDS
=46ellowships for women in science (tenure-track).
      The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of
Groningen, The Netherlands invites applications for a Rosalind 
=46ranklin Fellowship. To promote the participation of women scientists 
in the faculty, five tenure-track fellowships will be awarded to 
outstanding women scientists from any of the disciplines mathematics, 
physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, pharmacy and computing 
science or related research areas.
Applicants must have:
a Ph.D and post-doctoral experience, preferably in different research 
institutions (Dutch applicants should have post-doctoral experience 
outside The Netherlands);
publications in top international scientific journals;
experience in supervising research projects;
the ability to successfully compete for external research funding.

      Evidence of international recognition will also be taken into 
account. Successful candidates will be expected to establish an 
independent, externally funded research program in collaboration with 
colleagues at the University of Groningen and elsewhere. They will 
also be expected to participate in and contribute to the development 
of the teaching program of the faculty.
      The 5-year fellowship comprises an annual salary of 42.000 =A4, 
and an accompanying research grant of 200.000 =A4.
      During these five years the fellow will be expected to 
concentrate on research with teaching duties comprising at most 20% 
of the time.
      Following a favorable evaluation at the end of the first 5 years 
the fellow will be awarded tenure and promotion to the rank of 
Associate Professor. After a further five years another evaluation 
will take place and if this proves favorable, promotion to full 
professor will follow.
