Trace Gas Biology Laboratory
Postdoctoral position: The production of ethene in marine algae
We invite applications for a 1-year U.K. Natural Environment Research
Council (NERC) funded postdoctoral position to study the production of
ethene in marine macro- and microalgae. This reactive trace gas is one of
the best characterised growth regulators in higher plants. Ethene production
has also been observed in marine macroalgae and a freshwater phytoplankton,
suggesting that it may also act as a chemical signal in algae. Several
ethene production pathways are known, including one where acrylate is a
precursor. Acrylate decarboxylase has been found in beans and yeast and it
was suggested that algae use this metabolic route to form ethene. Production
of dimethyl sulphide (DMS) and acrylate by some marine algae is well known.
This project is based on our laboratory observations of co-production of DMS
and ethene, and field data indicating light-dependency of DMSP lyase
activity, and DMS and ethene production.
This position is available from 1 October 2002. Enthusiastic applicants with
a recent PhD and background in trace gas biology, algal ecophysiology or
biochemistry are welcome. The successful applicant will join the Trace Gas
Biogeochemistry Group of Professor Peter Liss and work in the recently
refurbished Trace Gas Biology Laboratory with Dr Michael Steinke and Dr Gill
Malin. Applications, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae and the
names and addresses of three referees, should be sent to Dr J.P. Darch,
Research Administrator, School of Environmental Sciences, University of
East Anglia, Norwich, NR4 7TJ, by 26 July 2002.
Further information is available at

Enquires may be made either to M. Steinke M.Steinke@uea.ac.uk) or G. Malin
(G.Malin@uea.ac.uk). Salary will be on the Research and Analogous 1A scale
starting in the range GBP 17,626 to GBP 19,681 depending on experience and
qualifications.
