SCIENTISTS WATCHING FORMATION OF LATEST EL NINO CYCLE
from Scripps Howard News Service

Government climate scientists say they should know in the next six
weeks or
so whether the latest El Nino cycle is more likely to make for
mudslides or
mist along the Pacific Coast and a normal or mild winter in the
Midwest.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's network of
ocean
buoys and satellites has found increasingly warmer-than-normal
sea-surface
temperatures across much of the equatorial Pacific since early last
year.

El Nino weather conditions occur when eastern Pacific water
temperatures
warm up enough to alter normal patterns of cloudiness and rainfall in
the
tropical Pacific basin.

geographer to teach intermediate courses in soils, hydrology
and/or
geomorphology. GIS experience is a plus. We encourage
applications from
persons with recent PhD or ABD status. Position will start
October 1. For
further information, please contact Anya Butt at anya@fatih.edu.tr or

Investigators on research of the ocean
carbon cycle by processing large data sets from satellite observations
and
in-situ data collections. You will also evaluate model and data
products,
have an MA/MS (PhD preferred) in Oceanography, Meteorology,
Biology,
Geochemistry, Physics or a related field, with at least 1 year of
