BIOGEOGRAPHY BIBLIOGRAPHY

FYI, I[CHARLES SMITH] have just opened a free
(and noncommercial) Web-based service entitled "Early Classics in
Biogeography, Distribution, and Diversity Studies: To 1950,"
at: http://www.wku.edu/~smithch/biogeog/
This service consists of a bibliography "enhanced"
in several ways,
especially with links to Web-based biographical information on the
authors
involved, and the full-text (as collected in several ways) of many of
the
entries. It is meant to serve advanced students and faculty involved
in
related studies and coursework.
In addition, and should you not be aware of
them already, you might find
three other natural history-related sites I have created
interesting:
"The Alfred Russel Wallace Page"
http://www.wku.edu/~smithch/index1.htm
"MAMMFAUN"

"HERPFAUN"

Thanks very much for your time and attention!

MARINE ECOLOGY POSITION

I think I already sent this announcement out, but Phil's letter
is new...

I'm writing in hopes that you will help spread the word about
a Marine Ecologist position that will soon be advertised (3
April) at The National Marine Fisheries Service Northwest Fisheries
Science Center, in Seattle (advertisement below). The position
is a GS-12 level (somewhat analogous to an Assistant Professor
level). We are looking for excellence and for candidates
that are productive team players that will help build a strong program
in Fisheries Ecology and "Ecosystem-based" Fisheries
Management. We are casting a broad net and will seriously
consider applicants with experience in any subdiscipline of ecology
and with expertise in taxa other than fish.

We are building an exciting, young group of
researchers that creatively address issues of fisheries ecology in
ways that move beyond traditional fisheries management approaches (see
list of recent publications below). Please disperse this
advertisement and letter to anyone you know that might be interested.
If they have questions, they should feel free to give me a call
(206-860-3473) or contact me via email phil.levin@noaa.gov.
     Thanks and Cheers,

     Phil Levin

The Northwest Fisheries Science Center (<font

working in any area of ecology, to complement the existing strengths
in fisheries biology of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center. We are
specifically interested in candidates who will address one or more of
the following topics: (1) interactions of a exploited fish populations
with predators, competitors, and prey; (2) effects of fishing on fish
habitat; (3) interactions between fishes and their habitat; (4) Marine
Protected Areas as a fisheries conservation and management tool.
Additionally, the incumbent will serve as a technical liaison and
provide outreach to fishery managers and constituents on the topic of
marine protected areas and/or ecosystem-based management, and is
expected to publish research in peer-reviewed literature. A
Ph.D. or equivalent degree, postdoctoral research experience,
demonstrated expertise and research productivity are desired.
Applicants must address and meet specific placement factors and

US NATIONAL PARK SERVICE FELLOWSHIPS

Fellowship Program Encourages the Use

of National Parks for Scientific Research

     National Parks contain diverse plant
communities that have tremendous
potential to be used as outdoor laboratories for basic research in
ecological processes. To encourage the use of National
Parks,
Monuments, and Seashores for science, National Park Ecological
Research
(NPER) Fellowship Program was established as a partnership of the
National Park Service, the National Park Foundation, and the
Ecological
Society of America. It is funded through a generous grant from
the
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The program encourages and
supports
outstanding postdoctoral research in ecological sciences related to
the

flora of National Parks.
This opportunity is open to researchers who
are eligible to work in the
United States; have completed their Ph.D. within three years prior
to
the award date; and have a faculty member or research sponsor
affiliated
with an established research institution who will serve as
co-Principal
Investigator for the proposed research. Each proposal is evaluated
on

its scientific merit; the creativity of the research question
and/or
approach; the potential of the applicant to conduct high-quality
ecological research; and the value of the Park natural resources
or
ecological features (e.g., habitats, communities, gradients, species)
to
the proposed research. Successful proposals will integrate the
park's

resources into the research to be performed.
Five NPER Fellowships have been awarded over
the first two award

years.

Fellowships are funded for $50,000 per
year for up to three years and
can be used for research stipends, fieldwork expenses,
equipment,

attendance at scientific meetings and other research related
expenses.
     Additional informatio and application
materials for the 2002
fellowships are available at http://www.esa.org/nper/.
Completed
applications must be received at ESA Headquarters between September
1,
2002 and October 1, 2002. For more information on the NPER
Fellowship
Program, visit the website at http://www.esa.org/nper or contact:
