REFLECTIONS ON UNIVERSITY RESEARCH FUNDING, FROM PHYSICS TODAY<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Submitted by DIALOGer Craig Tobias--thanks,
Craig!<br>
Just wanted to drop a note and check whether you have read Birnbaums
article<br>
&quot;A Personal Reflection on University Research Funding&quot; which
appeared in the March Physics Today?&nbsp; Not saying that I agree
with all of it but I have<br>
heard some of his points echoed in various circles.&nbsp; You can find
it at<br>
http://www.physicstoday.org/vol-55/iss-3/p49.html</div>
<div>Hope all is well. Craig Tobias</div>

<div>SPEAKERS NEEDED</div>
<div>Looking for plenary speakers on science and restoration:</div>
<div>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Message from DIALOGer Anke
Mueller-Solger</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>I am on the organizing committe for a semi-large (about 600-800
people), semi-regional conference, the CALFED Science Conference 2003
(s. <a
href="http://calfed.water.ca.gov/events_news.html"
>http://calfed.water.ca.gov/events_news.html</a>&nbsp;) which will
take place in Sacramento, CA, Jan. 14-16, 2003. The emphasis is on
&quot;Science and Restoration&quot; in the&nbsp;San
Francisco&nbsp;estuary and its watershed. We are
currently&nbsp;looking for excellent (interesting, captivating,
motivating, reknowned...) plenary speakers from around the nation (or
world)&nbsp;to&nbsp;give us their perspective
on&nbsp;&quot;restoration and science&quot; or &quot;restoration and
policy,&quot; or law, or land use, or some such thing. We are also
specifically looking for reknowned experts to talk about salmon
restoration or a large-scale restoration project they have been
involved in. Furthermore, we are striving for a more gender-balanced
plenary session, i.e. we are&nbsp;especially looking for more women
speakers. Does anyone have any good suggestions? I'd very much
appreciate it!</div>

<div>Hope you are all having a great time!&nbsp; cheers ,sue</div>
