Field Trips

Although the meeting will take much of your time, we do not want you to miss out on any of the history, culture, beauty, and other places of interest that are unique to the Salt Lake City area. The field trips that follow are planned to give you a taste of what this area of Utah has to offer.

Antelope Island, Great Salt Lake and Prehistoric Lake Bonneville Field Trip
Date: Sunday, February 9, 2003
Cost: $33.00 per person

Antelope Island lies in the Great Salt Lake and it can be accessed by car via a causeway. On this all-day field trip we will visit the State Park where bison, deer and perhaps bighorn sheep can be viewed. We can also view prehistoric beaches of Lake Bonneville, that covered up to 50,000 km2 of the Great Basin 32-14 thousand years ago. The trip will be led by geologists Dr. Don Currey and Des Moser.

Bear Lake Ecology and Paleolimnology Field Trip
Date: Sunday, February 9, 2003
Cost: $36.00 per person

Bear Lake, spanning the Utah-Idaho border, lies 150 miles north of Salt Lake City. The lake hosts several endemic fishes and is an important fishery for both states. It is also a site of intensive paleolimnological studies on 120-m-long cores collected using the new Global Lake Drilling (GLAD800) drilling platform. Fish ecologist Chris Luecke and paleolimnologist Walt Dean will be your hosts for viewing this fascinating lake.

Soldier's Hollow Skiing Trip
Dates: Friday night, February 14, 2003 and Saturday, February 15, 2003
Cost: $135.00 per person

The Castle Inn is a beautiful bed and breakfast located near Midway, Utah, and near the Soldier Hollow Olympic cross country skiing venue. Ski rentals are available at the venue. Downhill skiers may also stay at the Inn and travel by their own vehicle to nearby downhill resorts (Deer Valley, Park City). Hot tub available. Costs are for double occupancy. You will need to rent a vehicle and travel 55 minutes from Salt Lake City to the Inn. Price includes lodging on the night of the 14th and breakfast and skiing on the 15th.

All of the field trips listed above are dependent upon a minimum number of reservations and some have space limitations that apply.
