Symposium Application Instructions

DIACES SYMPOSIUM (Coastal, Estuarine and Great Lakes focus)

To foster understanding and management of estuaries, coasts and the Great Lakes

The first DIACES symposium was held in October, 2002. Contingent on the success of a new proposal, a second symposium is planned for the fall of 2004. Interested graduates should register their PhD abstract with the DIALOG program. This will place you on a distribution list for symposium updates and other information of interest to recent grads.

DISCCRS SYMPOSIUM (Climate Change)

To foster understanding and collaborations across the range of sciences involved in Climate Change Research

The application deadline for the first DISCCRS symposium has passed. Contingent on the success of a new proposal, a second symposium is planned. Interested graduates should register their PhD abstract with the DISCCRS program. This will place you on a distribution list for symposium updates and other information of interest to recent grads.

DIALOG V SYMPOSIUM (full range of aquatic science)

To foster understanding and collaborations across the full range of aquatic science.

Dates: October 19-24, 2003
Location: Bermuda Biological Station for Research
Eligibility Window: PhD completed January 1, 2001 – March 31, 2003

APPLICATION MATERIALS

Step 1:

Complete and electronically submit your abstract using the interactive abstract submission form. You may submit the abstract at any time. We encourage everyone to submit their abstract as soon as they graduate. The rest of the application materials may be submitted at any time before the application deadline.

Step 2:

Send ONE ELECTRONIC FILE with the following 3 Application parts to dialog@whitman.edu (for DIALOG and DIACES) or disccrs@whitman.edu (for DISCCRS).

  1. Resume (2-page limit)
    Include the following (You may include other information if you have space, but DO NOT submit reprints or anything more than 2 pages total in length): Name; research interests/skills (3 lines maximum); college/university educational history (list dates attended, degree, institution, and subject area); professional employment (list current position first; include job title, institution and start/end dates); academic awards/honors; publications (published, in press, or submitted); presentations at scientific meetings; professional society memberships.
  2. Essay #1 (1/2 page maximum length)
    Answer the question: Why did you select your particular dissertation topic, and what is the importance/significance/potential impact of your findings? In other words, "why did this topic capture your scientific attention and why should anyone care what you discovered?"
  3. Essay #2 (1/2 page maximum length)
    Answer the question: Why do you want to attend the symposium? Please address the following: your current scientific interests and career goals; ways in which participation would enhance your professional growth; and what you could contribute to the symposium.

Application Format

  1. Format all pages to fit 8.5" X 11" paper with 1" margins (text must fit within a 6.5" x 9.0" block (14.3 cm x 198 cm)
  2. Use times 12 font or equivalent
  3. Use a separate sheet of paper for each of the three sections
  4. Start the three sections as follows:
    Center 'Resume' followed by your name on the first line of the Resume
    Left justify 'Essay #1' followed by your name on the first line of the first essay, and
    Left justify 'Essay #2' followed by your name on the first line of the second essay.
  5. Save all 3 sections in one document; If possible, save file in Rich Text Format (rtf)
  6. Label the file "DIALOGAPP_<your first initial_your last name>.rtf", "DIACESAPP_<your first initial_your last name>.rtf" or "DISCCRSAPP_<your first initial_your last name>".rtf. Example: DIALOGAPP_C_Weiler.rtf

Instructions for sending applications

  1. All applications must be submitted electronically. There is no need for a "hard copy".
  2. Send applications to dialog@whitman.edu (for DIACES or DIALOG) or disccrs@whitman.edu (for DISCCRS), using DIALOGV [or DIACES or DISCCRS] App. <Your Full Name> on the "Subject" line. Example subject line: DIALOGV App. Caroline S. Weiler

Step 3:

Request 2 letters of recommendation. Be sure to request these well before the deadline so that your referees will have plenty of time to respond.

Instructions for sending Letters of Recommendation

  1. Support letters should be sent electronically by the referee to dialog@whitman.edu (for DIALOG or DIACES) or disccrs@whitman.edu (for DISCCRS).
  2. Letters should be placed in the body of the e-mail message; please do not use attachments. If attachments must be used, use only plain text--no letterhead or other images.
  3. Subject line should state "DIALOG [or DIACES or DISCCRS] reference letter for " Example Subject Line: DIALOG reference letter for Susan Weiler

Application deadlines, including the deadlines for letters of recommendation, are firm:

Application Deadline for DIACES: May 1, 2002
Application Deadline for DISCCRS: October 6, 2002
Application Deadline for DIALOG V: May 1, 2003
