LIMNOLOGY AND OCEANOGRAPHY ONLINE TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

I am having trouble downloading the PDF files. When I click on them, they don't show up in my web browser.

You will need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in order to view the PDF files. Acrobat Reader is free and available from www.adobe.com. It can be used as a free-standing program to read PDF files, and will also install plug-in support to allow you to view PDF files within Netscape and Internet Explorer web browsers. The program has several viewing options and zoom levels. Many will find the "fit to visible" zoom level most comfortable, but experiment to find the display that is best for you.

If you have installed Acrobat Reader, but PDF files do not download and appear in your web browser, then your web browser is probably not correctly configured to use Acrobat Reader. Additional help can be found on the Adobe website. For Macintosh computers, click here to view Adobe's online instructions. For Windows computers, click here. Other help files for downloading, installing and configuring Reader can be found here.

Help! I can't seem to log in to read L&O online.

Please run through the following checklist and make sure you are logging in correctly.

Are you a current subscriber? If you elected to subscribe to either the print or electronic-only versions of L&O, you are entitled to access L&O online. New subscriptions are posted to the website each Friday; if you are a new subscriber, your subscription may not have been entered yet.

Has your subscription lapsed? If your subscription has expired and was not renewed, you will not be able to log in to access the online issues. If you feel that this is in error and you have renewed, please contact the ASLO Business Office at business@aslo.org and we will be happy to check on this for you. If you have not renewed, we encourage you to do so so that you can continue receiving your membership benefits, including online access to L&O. Renewals may be submitted online by clicking here. As soon as your renewal has been processed by the Business Office, you will once again be able to enjoy L&O on line.

Please note: Although subscribers are given a grace period to renew their subscription at the beginning of the year, once your subscription has lapsed your access record will be deleted. You will need to return to the Online Access Setup page and set up online access again.

Have you set up online access yet? To access L&O online, you must first set up access. If you have not done so, go to the Online Access Setup page.

Have you entered your user name and password correctly?

Your user name is your member ID number without the leading "P".
Your password is the one you chose when you set up access. Note that passwords are case-sensitive and must be entered exactly as you originally did.

You may have set up "Access Without Password", and are receiving the login prompt due to an error. See the next item.

I signed up for "Single Computer Access Without Password" but when I try to connect, the website asks me for my password.

When accessing the restricted L&O files, users selecting the "Single Computer Access Without Password" method should never see a dialog box requesting a member ID number and password. If you find that you were able to access L&O online immediately after you went through the setup procedure, but at a later time were asked to provide your user name and password, then you probably do not have a fixed internet address and cannot use the "Single Computer Access Without Password" method. In that case, please contact the Web Editor and request that your online access record be deleted. After you receive an email notice that your record has been deleted, you will need to return to the setup form and choose the Access by Member Number and Password option.

I used the "Access by Member ID and Password" method to set up access, but the website asks me for my "user name" to log in. What is my user name?

Your user name is your Member ID number without the leading "P". For example, a member with ID number P000001 should enter the value 000001 when asked to supply a user name.

I used the "Access by Member ID and Password" method to set up access, but I can't remember my password now.

When you set up your online access, you were asked to provide your member ID number, a password, and an email address in case of any problems. You can have your password sent to you via email as a reminder. Click here to request an email reminder of your access information.

Our library facility has purchased online access to Limnology and Oceanography. However, when I try to access L&O online, I am asked for a user name and password.

Your library requested online access from a specific range of computer internet addresses. If you are asked to provide your member ID number and a password, then your computer was not among the addresses provided. Please contact your library staff and request that your computer address be added.

I downloaded the EndNote filter so that I can import L&O Tables of Contents into the EndNote program, but I don't know what to do with it.

EndNote filters must be placed in a "filters" subdirectory to be recognized. The filters subdirectory will be located inside the directory to which you installed the EndNote program. Move the ASLO.enf file into that directory and select the ASLO filter when you import the downloadable EndNote version of Tables of Contents.
