Before you can read L&O online, you must set up your online access. If you have already set up access and are having trouble using Limnology and Oceanography online, please refer to the L&O Online Troubleshooting Guide.
There are two separate methods for reading L&O online. First, follow the Table of Contents links at left to find the volume and issue you are interested in. L&O online issues begin with Vol. 44, Issue 1 (Jan 1999). When you have read the following instructions, click on the issue you wish to read in order to view the Table of Contents.
In the Table of Contents there are two icons under the page numbers for most articles. Clicking on the left icon will bring up a separate window with the abstract for that article. Within that separate window, you can view, print, or save the abstract.
Clicking on the right icon will bring up the complete article in a new browser window. Within that window, you can view, print or save the article. The article will be displayed as a PDF document. PDF (Portable Document Format) is a display format created by Adobe and designed to completely reproduce the appearance of the original printed page.
L&O has recently begun offering a new service to authors: Free-Access Publication.
Free-Access articles are posted permanently in the public-access area of the L&O
website, rather than in the subscribers-only section. Free-Access articles are indicated by the "unlocked" icon (
), and are freely available to subscribers and non-subscribers alike. Other articles are only accessible to L&O subscribers, and are indicated by a PDF icon (
).
You will need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in order to view the PDF files. Acrobat Reader is free and available from www.adobe.com. It can be used as a free-standing program to read PDF files, and will also install plug-in support to allow you to view PDF files within web browsers. The program has several viewing options and zoom levels. Many will find the "fit to visible" zoom level most comfortable, but experiment to find the display that is best for you.
On the Table of Contents page, you will find a link directly under the blue navigation bar near at the top of the page, labeled "View PDF version of this Table of Contents". Click on that link to switch to the PDF version of the Table of Contents, which looks exactly like the printed Table of Contents. The title of each article in the PDF version is linked to the full-text PDF version of the article. Again, you will need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in order to view the PDF files.
