At the start of 2013 we hit the ground running with many great activities so far! Though we still have a lot of our young polar adventurers and scientists currently on the field to continue their work in the austral summer, we are preparing for more exciting events in the near future.
In January we participated in the Arctiic Frontiers meeting in Tromso, Norway where APECS co-hosted a reception with the Fram Center! We had a successful turnout with facilitating meetings with young researchers and scientists with our popular polar bingo (Polingo) games. I had the opportunity to attend the Young Scienctist Forum workshop where we learned several great tips on how to develop a successful proposal. Through these activities we brought in more enthusiastic APECS members who were excited to share some of their great ideas with us.
In February 2013, we got a chance to attend the Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) 9th Steering Group meeting in Postdam, Germany. We introduced APECS to the CliC community and discussed how our group of young scientists can help to move the CliC international intiatives forward. For more information on the outcome of this meeting and to continue to follow along with our activities, please go to: http://www.climate-cryosphere.org/.
We had successful Council and Research Activites (RAC) and Membership Involvement (MIC) meetings. Through these discussions our RAC chair, Heather Marish, as well as our Council members will create a Research Highlights resource for our members. This will be a great way to showcase current science publications from our members. The APECS. Research Highlights is a way to bring cutting edge science to a public space and highlight the fantastic research that fellow Polar scientists are involved in! More on this to come. Our MIC meeting, led by Ines Tavernier and Dagmar Obbels, included a lot of enthusiastic Council members wanting to include an additional webinar to provide more information on our APECS National Commitees (NC), strategies on how to initiated cross-border activities with several NC's at a time , as well as, implement a webinar focus in the Southern Hemisphere with the help of our APECS Asia and Oceania group.
Currently, we are preparing for our APECS workshop at the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) where we will teach young researchers important skills and create new collaborations with both early career colleagues and senior mentors. For more information, please go to: http://www.apecs.is/...vents/assw-2013. Additionally, we will organize a workshop at the Davos Atmosphere and Cryosphere Assembly in July 2013.
