SEA TURTLE MONITORING, TRADITIONAL TARO FARMING, AND SNORKELING PROGRAM IN MAUI, HAWAII

Day 1: Arrive at the Kahului Airport on the
island of Maui. Group transfer lodging. Visit to green turtle basking beach.
Day 2: Morning transfer to west side for marine
environment immersion. Check out gear and safety briefing Snorkel and enjoy
ocean sport activities. Next three nights in campground.
Day 3: Briefing and training for your first
turtle monitoring survey from one of the Maui's beautiful beaches. We spend
approximately two hours collecting data, and then continue snorkeling to
discover the wide variety of life in a coral reef ecosystem and learn to
identify fish. Evening Nest Watch for nesting hawksbill turtles and hatchlings.
Day 4: Dawn Patrol to look for nesting
hawksbill turtle tracks. Late morning we conduct another sea turtle water
survey. After lunch we transfer to the northeast side of the island, and in the
afternoon monitor the green turtle basking beach. Overnight in the town of
we enjoy an incredibly scenic drive to the remote Kahakuloa Valley. We meet our
hosts and instructors and settle in to our primitive accommodations in one of
the most beautiful valleys in Maui. Properties are owned solely by Hawaiian
families in this area and entry is by permission only. We receive a briefing,
and then volunteers can choose from a variety of tasks to help with
days steeped in traditional practices including taro farming and fish pond
restoration tasks. Learning opportunities include Tapa (or kapa) pounding
demonstration, hula lesson (basic) and preparation of food for traditional imu

farewell to our hosts. After lunch transfer to hotel with o stops of interest
