Graduate Student Opportunity, Chemical Oceanography

The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (www.icbm.de) is the marine research institute at the Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg with locations in Oldenburg and Wilhelmshaven. At the location in Wilhelmshaven we seek to fill a position for a

Ph.D. Student Position
(E13 TV-L, 65%)

and is available from 01.07.2014 or later for a term of 3 years as part of the project PassMe.

The project PassMe develops new parameterizations for the air-sea gas exchange of climate-relevant gases, particularly in the context of the effects of marine surface films. Such films are very thin layers on the sea surface, which differ significantly in chemical and biological properties compared to the underlying bulk water. Therefore, any interactions between the ocean and atmosphere are affected by the films, and PassMe is focused on the gas exchange of CO2. Field instruments with state-of-the-art technologies are developed for the in-situ measurements of biochemical properties of the sea surface, as well for autonomous measurements of gas exchange rates. Laboratory experiments and measurements in a wind-wave tunnel complement regular work on sea. The overall objective of PassMe is to improve forecasting of air-sea gas exchange rates of CO2 on a global scale.

Candidates must hold a Master of Science (or equivalent) degree in the field of oceanography, chemistry or related subjects. Experience in analytical chemistry of organic substances is required (i.e. spectroscopy, chromatography, electrochemistry), including sampling, pretreatments, analysis and data evaluation. Good English language skills and experience in statistical data analysis are required. Experience in the design and development of technical instrumentation is beneficial. Candidates should have a strong interest in multidisciplinary research.

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of women in science. Therefore, female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. In accordance with Lower Saxony legal regulations (NHG §21), equally qualified female candidates will be given preference.

Applicants with disabilities will be employed preferentially if equally qualified.
