The Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland
Fisheries (IGB) is the largest freshwater ecology research institute in Germany
It is a member of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. and the Leibniz-Association
(www.wgl.de). The FVB manages 8 large research institutes in
Berlin that have close links to all three universities in the German capital.
IGB offers excellent laboratory and field facilities for interdisciplinary
research, large-scale experimental facilities, and long-term research programs
and data sets.
PhD - position in long-term ecological research in Berlin; Germany
The Department of Ecosystem Research at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland
Fisheries (IGB) in Berlin, Germany, has an immediate opening for a PhD position
in the realm of lake ecosystem dynamics with a focus on plankton ecology, food web interactions, or the coupling of lake physics and population dynamics. The research topic would include an analysis
of the relative strengths of the external and internal driving forces responsible
for the temporal variability in plankton communities and biodiversity in the
context of global warming.
The position is limited to three years. Requirements
include a master's degree in
mathematics, statistics, ecosystem modelling, biology, ecology, bioinformatics,
or a related field. The successful
candidate will be expected to have a strong interest in ecological questions
and handling of large data sets. The study will be based on several decadal
time series of abiotic and biotic variables from various lake ecosystems. Thus,
we expect strong skills and interest in statistics
and time series analysis or stochastic and/or deterministic modelling. The
candidate will be expected to complete a dissertation. The working
language in the institute is English, and we value diversity in the backgrounds
and nationalities of our researchers. IGB and FVB are equal opportunity
employers and specifically welcome applications from female scientists.
Preference will be given to applicants with disabilities when qualifications
are equivalent. Salary
is paid according to the TVoeD (65% position). In keeping with the IGB's policy
regarding gender equity, female applicants are particularly encouraged. Disabled
people with identical qualifications will be favored. Please submit
a full curriculum vitae, including a letter of motivation and contact
information of two referees. Please send all documents as a single PDF file to email@example.com.
The review of applications will begin on 15th
of January 2014 and will continue until the position is filled. For
additional information and informal inquiries, please contact Prof. Dr. Rita
Adrian, Head of the Department of Ecosystem Research at IGB (firstname.lastname@example.org;
Tel. +49(0) 30 641 81 680).
