Hydrodynamic control of biofilm structure and function in running waters

The Department of River Ecology at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ is offering the following vacancy as of 1st January 2014:

Scientist/ PhD Position (m/f)

Subject: Hydrodynamic control of biofilm structure and function in running waters

Workingtime: 75%, limited to 3 years

Your duties:

▪ Cooperation with work group of Prof. Lorke (Environmental Physics,
University Koblenz-Landau; close cooperation with secound PhD project
with focus on hydrodynamics)

▪ Clarify mechansims and processes in biofilm nutrient uptake in running waters under various hydrodynamic conditions

▪ Research on different scales, i.e. from micro level to the river reach
scale, with the help of mesocosm-experiments as well as in situ analyses

▪ Focus on the analyses of the biofilm structure (studies on taxonomical composition and architecture via
molecular analyses and confocal laser scanning microscopy) and biofilm function (studies on nutrient up-take via isotope addition)

▪ Studies will be undertaken in the catchment of the river Bode (TERENO site)

Your profile:

▪ Successfully completed the university education (master-level) in
biology or a related discipline with a focus on aquatic ecology and/or
microbial ecology

▪ Advantageous: experience in the study of biofilms (qualitative and
quantitative analyses), ecology of running waters and experimental
ecology

▪ Essential: the readiness to work interdisciplinary, to partake in
regular field trips often spanning several days as well as traveling to
the cooperating partners at the University of Koblenz-Landau

We offer:

▪ Excellent technical facilities which are without parallel
