Student Opportunity Announcements
Graduate Student Research in Biogeochemical Modeling
I am looking for M.Sc and Ph.D. students to join the
Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Georgia
(http://www.marsci.uga.edu/), located in the lively college
town Athens, to work on modeling nutrient and microbial
dynamics in porous media, including marine sediments and
coastal groundwater.
One current project (Macrofaunal Community Effects on
Benthic Exchange Fluxes) integrates ecological and
biogeochemical components central to benthic-pelagic
coupling. The joint experimental and computational analysis
of macrofaunal behavior is designed to provide insight into
biogeochemical and ecological interactions that affect
nutrient dynamics, and aims at advancing the quantification
of the role of benthic biodiversity on ecosystem function.
The student will be expected to participate in a series of
sediment microcosm experiments at the Chesapeake
Biological Lab. His/Her focus will be on incorporating those
experimental data into a three-dimensional reactive transport
model, and the scaling up benthic nutrient exchange to larger
areas.
Candidates with a background in natural sciences or
engineering and an interest in modeling are encouraged to
contact Dr. Christof Meile (cmeile@uga.edu). For more
information on the biogeochemical modeling group and
additional graduate student opportunities in the Meile Lab
