Extension Specialist - Sea Grant Oil Spill Science Outreach Program



Auburn University is seeking candidates
and applications for one of four positions located throughout the southeastern
United States.  Auburn University’s Extension
Specialist position will be located in Mobile, AL through the
Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium.
 
The position is a two-year, limited term appointment funded through
grants. Continuation of the position is contingent upon availability of
funding. The appointment is a 12-month, non-tenure track position that reports
to the Director, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium and Director, Marine
Programs.



 

The oil
spill science outreach program will focus on the two-way transfer of
information between (1) the people whose livelihoods depend on a healthy Gulf
of Mexico or who are involved in the protection and management of Gulf of
Mexico coastal and marine resources; and (2) the Gulf of Mexico Research
Initiative scientists, administrators and board of directors. 

 



Responsibilities require substantial time and effort interacting with
scientists and target audiences that use the science; reviewing and translating
recent peer reviewed and other publications from the Gulf of Mexico Research
Initiative and other funding sources; developing outreach programs;
writing outreach materials; and organizing and facilitating meetings.  
The
successful candidate must be able to understand and translate technical oil
spill science results in a particular focus area for diverse audiences; engage
with people with different perspectives; and lead and facilitate public
meetings, seminars and workshops. The outreach positions will work regionally
and as a team, and therefore significant travel within the Gulf of Mexico and
beyond is expected.


Qualifications
require a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a field of study
that includes at least one of the following: 1) physics including physical
oceanography, ocean modeling or closely aligned, 2) chemistry including
chemical oceanography, environmental chemistry or closely aligned field, 3)
biology including marine biology, biological oceanography, coastal ecology or
closely aligned field, 4) public health including behavioral science, environmental
risk assessment, epidemiology, population health or closely aligned field.  A minimum of two years of post-graduate experience
in any of the described areas is also required.
   Demonstrated evidence and experience of
strong science interpretation skills and excellent communication skills, both
verbal and written, are required.
  A valid
driver’s license is required.
  The
successful candidate must meet eligibility requirement for work in the United
States at the time of appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working
legally for the term of the appointment. Desired qualifications include an
earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution in a field of study as
described above and at least two years of practical experience. A successful
track record of working with diverse groups and developing and implementing
outreach programs is essential.
  In
addition, demonstrated ability to interact with coastal communities, resource
managers, scientists, coastal industry leaders, policy and decision-makers and
other stakeholders is desired.
