This is senior level professional scientific work independently performing
project coordination, research, analysis, and preparation of technical
publications regarding a major basin or restoration project.


Job duties include:



  1. Provides scientific support for Springs Protection Initiative: designs,
    conducts, and publishes scientific assessments of critical water quality and
    biological issues in District lakes, rivers, and springs;
  2. Participates as senior scientist on project teams for scientific assessment,
    research, and management of water quality;
  3. Develops data base, workbook, and statistical methods to efficiently
    extract, organize, analyze, and publish biological, water quality, and sediment
    data;
  4. Consults with and provides information to senior management, Governing Board
    members, elected officials, other government agencies, basin councils and
    committees, and the public, and serve as District representative;
  5. Manages and oversees contractual projects while keeping managers apprised of
    progress and issues;
  6. Maintains and enhances knowledge of scientific literature and research
    developments; particpates in scientific conferences, and reviews scientific
    literature, reports, and manuscripts; and
  7. Mentor lower level staff.
Minimum Qualifications:

A master's degree from an accredited college or university in biology,
limnology, chemistry, botany, ecology, environmental science or related field
with environmental science emphasis, and four years experience in natural
resource management and publication of scientific papers in peer reviewed
scientific journals; or a doctorate from an accredited college or university in
biology, limnology, chemistry, botany, ecology, environmental science or a
relate field with environmental science emphasis, and three years experience in
natural resource management and publication of scientific papers in peer
reviewed scientific journals.


SJRWMD has determined this to be a mandatory-testing position as described in
Section 440.102, Florida Statutes. Any offer of employment for a
mandatory-testing position will be contingent upon successfully passing a drug

Prefer candidate with a Ph.D. who has:



  1. Knowledge of limnology; aquatic and wetland ecosystem structure and
    functions; water and sediment chemistry; water quality analyses; data base
    techniques; statistical techniques; peer-reviewed journal publication;
  2. Skill in compilation, management, and analysis of large data bases including
    statistical analysis; scientific analysis of biological and water and sediment
    chemistry data; natural resource management problem solving; group leadership
    and coordination; written publication and oral presentation of complex
    scientific information for peers and for laypersons; and
  3. Ability to understand and analyze complex biological and chemical
    relationships in fresh waters; refine, condense, and analyze large scientific
    data sets; apply scientific analyses to solve water management problems;
    collaborate with peers in project teams; convey complex scientific information
    to lay persons.

Working conditions: Both office and field environments in wetlands and on
water bodies in extreme weather conditions of heat, humidity, and cold.
