Post-doctoral Research Associate – Marine Organism Population Connectivity Modeling
This position will work on marine organism population connectivity and small-scale larval transport mechanism in the southeast US and the Caribbean Region, including the Bahamas and the Gulf of Mexico. The successful candidate will build upon our current off-line Lagrangian transport model to develop a comprehensive tool for connectivity studies. This model couples an Individual Based Model with physical parameters of the flow as well as a habitat distribution map. The candidate will work on several projects addressing transport and recruitment strategies around islands, transport from spawning aggregation sites, mesophotic and deep coral connectivity in the Caribbean Sea and in the Strait of Florida. The selected candidate is also expected to take part in field experiments involving gliders and advance underwater optical sensors to validate model results. Further, the candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment involving coral scientists, ecologists, fish biologists, physical oceanographers and ocean engineers from HBOI and other collaborators.
We are looking for a motivated person with a multidisciplinary background in oceanography and experience in modeling (biological and/or physical) in a Unix/Linux environment. The successful candidate is also expected to write proposals to continue the funding of the position.
(1) A Ph.D. in marine science, physical oceanography, fisheries science, quantitative ecology, or a related field (required)
(2) Experience building and calibrating models, confronting them with limited data and expressing uncertainty, (3) Experience working with collaborators from diverse backgrounds and interest in working with interdisciplinary teams
(4) Excellent written and oral communication skills
(5) Strong programming skills
