RESEARCH SCIENTIST - OPTIMIZATION (PH.D.) - ALGAL PHYSIOLOGY

Algenol is seeking to fill one full-time Research Scientist position in its Algal Physiology Group to perform research aimed at understanding and optimizing algal growth, nutrient demand, and ethanol production under the guidance of the Director of Physiology. A strong background in algal physiology and application in biofuel, environmental, or biotechnology fields is desirable. Experience with inorganic chemistry and biogeochemistry as it relates to nutrient uptake and utilization in cyanobacteria and a strong background in cyanobacterial metabolism and biochemistry is preferred.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Design and conduct sound scientific experimental protocols
  • Participate directly in bioreactor and experiment setup and execution
  • Perform in-lab analyses
  • Provide sound data assessment and report results
  • Contribute to the development of algal cultivation strategies for enhanced growth and productivity
  • Guide technical personnel within work group
  • Support Physiology lab facilities and equipment maintenance 

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biology, Plant Physiology, Botany, Marine Biology, Phycology, Limnology, or comparable discipline; post-doctoral experience in a related discipline with active research and publications is preferred
  • Experienced and versed with comprehensive data analysis and synthesis
  • Proficient at reporting and presenting scientific results, reflected by solid publication record
  • Experienced with Microsoft Office applications
  • Fluent in written and spoken English 
 

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • Understanding of the carbonate system in seawater, mass transfer, gas equilibrium, and inorganic carbon uptake by photosynthetic microbes
  • Development and optimization of media recipes for photosynthetic microbes
  • Demonstrated experience with design, implementation, analysis, and interpretation of experiments involving multifactorial experimental design (DoE)
  • Operation of lab-scale photobioreactors and algal cultivation systems
  • Experience overseeing technicians and working in a team environment
