The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) is seeking a dynamic environmental chemist or scientist to manage its highly respected analytical services group. CBLs diverse analytical services include three core divisions: Nutrient Analytical Services Laboratory (NASL), Organic Analytical Services (OAS) and consultant analytical services (CAS). Routine analytical services provided include organic and inorganic sediment and water quality analysis, and PAH/PCB levels in multiple matrices. The laboratories operate on a local, national and international level supporting both private and public sectors. Analyses are performed at a National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation (NELAC) compliant level employing a variety of analytical instrumentation. Consultant services include collaborating with and drawing on expertise of the CBL faculty to provide consulting assistance in sampling design, guidance in sampling methodology (nutrient chemistry, heavy metals, trace metals, stable isotopes and trace organic compounds) to ensure compliance with scope of project work and achievement of data quality objectives and specialized analyses of stable isotopes and trace organics.
The successful candidate will ideally have an advanced degree in environmental science, chemistry or related discipline and at least 5 years of analytical experience that includes interactions with customers. The manager is responsible for developing, coordinating and completing contracts with all analytical services customers, ensuring all reporting requirements are met and overseeing a staff of approx. 6 analysts. The manager will have opportunities for conducting analyses also.
Appointment is funded on a cost-recovery basis. Salary and benefits are competitive and dependent on qualifications.
