Assistant or Associate Professor(s) of Fisheries

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources (CNR) has two full time (9-month), tenure track, academic year teaching (100%) positions available in the Fisheries and Water Resources Discipline. The positions will be focused on fisheries aquatic ecology. The successful applicants will be expected to teach 12 credits each semester with annual offerings in Fisheries Management, Fisheries Research, Life History of Fish, Fish Population Dynamics, and one or more courses from the Colleges 4-course Core Series (100- and 200-level, multidiscipline, team-taught courses). Teaching a minimum of three weeks during the summer field experience or in the European Environmental Studies Seminar for additional compensation is required. Other duties include undergraduate and graduate advising, and contribution to college and university governance. Faculty members are expected to accomplish a record of scholarly achievement in their field of interest to complement teaching responsibilities. Opportunities exist for involvement in research, outreach and international programs to meet University scholarship and service requirements. Experience in and desire to work with diverse populations of learners and stakeholders is required.



The Fisheries and Water Resources Discipline is in the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (www.uwsp.edu/cnr/). It has approximately 1600 undergraduates, 60 graduate students, and over 130 faculty and staff. The Fisheries and Water Resources Discipline is currently home to the Wisconsin Cooperative Fishery Research Unit (USGS), the Aquatic Biomonitoring Laboratory, the Center for Watershed Science and Education, and several joint research efforts with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources including the Fisheries Analysis Center and the Fisheries Propagation Science Center. The College supports premier undergraduate natural resource programs with disciplines in Fisheries and Water Resources, Forestry, Human Dimensions of Natural Resource Management, Soil and Waste Resources, Wildlife Ecology, and the Department of Paper Science and Engineering. The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point is a comprehensive regional university with 9500 undergraduate and 250 graduate students. Stevens Point, a pleasant college community with a population of 25,000, is midway between Milwaukee and Minneapolis near the center of the state. The area offers a wide range of cultural, shopping and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Qualifications: Candidates for the appointment should have or be near completion of a Ph.D. in Fisheries or a closely related field by the date of appointment. The relevant Ph.D. is required prior to the second retention decision. Strong field skills including the ability to operate field equipment necessary for teaching and research in aquatic resource management are required. Preference will be given for demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, and a demonstrated ability to work with students in field applications and conduct applied research. A wide variety of fisheries-specific expertise and skills will be considered, but all successful applicants are expected to have strong quantitative skills and extensive field-based experience and expertise including but not limited to active and passive fish capture and general fish identification and handling skills. Preference will be given to applicants demonstrating expertise in fish population dynamics and stock assessment, food web research, non-genetic molecular techniques in fish management and ecology including stable-isotopes and trace elements, fish habitat, and applied fish physiology. Collaborative team work experience across private, federal, state, municipal and tribal agencies is desirable.

Appointment Date: August 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Terms of Employment: Assistant or Associate Professor in Fisheries and Water Resources, tenure track, full-time, academic year appointment (9 months). Salary is commensurate with education and professional experience.
