Graduate Research Assistant

Summary of position:: The Great Lakes Center at SUNY Buffalo State seeks applications for a Graduate Research Assistant position working with lake sturgeon on the lower Niagara River.The successful candidate will contribute to a research project aiming to understand the habitat use and diet of lake sturgeon using the river and mouth during late spring and summer months. The project will use setlines to collect lake sturgeon and acoustic telemetry to observe habitat use.   Gut content analysis, benthic habitat maps and habitat use will be combined in order to identify habitats of importance for this population of lake sturgeon.


The student will start coursework in January 2014, and will begin field work May 2014.   Full support (competitive stipend, tuition, and Research Foundation for SUNY health insurance) is available for a minimum of two years, contingent on official transcript submission.

Job Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Develop proposal to study diet and habitat use of sub-adult and adult lake sturgeon in the lower Niagara River and Niagara Bar.
  • Employ existing techniques for obtaining and analyzing gut contents from lake sturgeon.
  • Assist in field collection of lake sturgeon
  • Develop and maintain an acoustic telemetry array for tracking lake sturgeon
  • Maintain records; data entry and database management, analysis, presentation of results and report writing.

Required Qualifications: Applicants should have a BS in fisheries, ecology, or a related field with competitive GPA and GRE scores. Prefer candidates with advanced coursework in aquatic ecology and statistics.  Prefer candidates with examples of strong writing, communication and computer skills.   The successful applicant will be interested in fish ecology, field ecology, GIS analysis, ecological modeling, and/or statistical analysis. Some experience in the above areas is preferred, as is previous research experience, including field data collection.  Highly motivated individuals who can work both independently as well as with others are preferred.

Educational Requirements: BS in Fisheries, Ecology, or a related field with competitive GPA and GRE scores.
