The NORTH PACIFIC RESEARCH BOARD is dedicated to building a clear understanding of the North Pacific, Bering Sea, and Arctic Ocean marine ecosystems that enables effective management and sustainable use of marine resources. To achieve this mission, NPRB supports peer-reviewed scientific research, which relies on collaboration with scientists at over 100 agencies, institutions, and companies. With the help of external reviewers and our Science and Advisory panels, we endeavor to select the most meritorious projects that also address pressing social needs. NPRB is recruiting for a highly qualified Science Director to lead this effort. The Science Director is responsible for design, implementation, and management of marine ecosystem research projects and
programs that help ensure sustainable use of natural marine resources throughout the North Pacific and Arctic. The Science Director supervises two people and works with the Executive Director to coordinate the data management and outreach programs with the science program.
Examples of Duties:
Develop and supervise the NPRB science program i n c o o r d i n a t i o n wi t h t h e
c ommu n i c a t i o n s a n d outreach and data management programs.
Apply understanding of marine ecosystem processes, oceanography, fisheries, and other marine sciences to developing integrated ecosystem research programs.
Design broad marine ecosystem r e s e a r c h programs, from climate/oceanography through fisheries, birds, mammals, and humans.
Determine scientific goals; lead multi-disciplinary a n d multi-institutional teams in making detailed plans to accomplish those goals.
Conduct programmatic and scientific review of proposals and final reports.
Draft policy documents regarding metadata and data transfer compliance, as well as compliance with program objectives.
Communicate complex scientific issues to a variety of audiences beyond scientists, including stakeholders, policy makers, communities, and the media.
Represent NPRB at public and private functions related to NPRB’s mission and goals.
Provide liaison and coordination with other entities performing marine research off Alaska.
Perform other related duties as assigned from time to time by the Executive Director of NPRB.
Perform as Acting Executive Director when necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to plan research projects and programs relevant to ma r ine resource management and adaptive management strategies.
Ability to conduct complex analysis of marine ecosystem processes and population dynamics of organisms at all trophic levels.
Knowledge of developing complex scientific and statistical analyses.
Ability to successfully publish research in peer reviewed journals as evidenced by a strong publication record and record of peer reviewing technical documents written by others.
Proven communication and interpersonal skills; must be able to communicate effectively, internally and externally, to multiple audiences.
Advanced ability as a manager, leader, and facilitator, including the ability to build teams and motivate, influence, and develop capacity in others.
Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and incorporate stakeholders into collaborative research projects.
A record of successful accomplishment with a particular emphasis on planning and oversight of multidisciplinary research that has natural resource management applications.
Advanced understanding of issues relating to marine ecosystems, including current, key, and developing issues.
Ability to work effectively and partner with key government, private, and academic institutions including partners in federal and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, and fisheries, oil and gas, tourism, and other marine industry organizations.
Ability to work with confidential information.
Ph.D. in biology, zoology, ecology, fisheries, oceanography, or a closely related field, AND, five years of professional experience at a senior level leading research in marine science disciplines related to NPRB's mission, with 3 years of experience supervising professional staff.
At least two years of experience planning and overseeing multi-disciplinary marine research programs.
