TWO POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS
ONE MID-LEVEL TECHNICIAN POSITION
MARINE MICROBIAL ECOLOGY, FUHRMAN LAB, USC

The Fuhrman lab at USC in Los Angeles anticipates two multi-year postdoctoral openings and one technician opening starting after 1 July 2013. The POSTDOCTORAL positions are in the following areas:
1. INTERACTIONS BETWEEN PROTISTS AND BACTERIA/ARCHAEA
2. INTERACTIONS BETWEEN VIRUSES AND BACTERIA/ARCHAEA
These positions are part of a foundation-funded research project that will focus on integrating bottom-up and top-down controlling factors in the regulation of natural marine planktonic microbial communities, requiring cooperation and coordination of microbiologists with different expertise. The Protist interactions will include photosynthetic, phagotrophic, and mixotrophic protists. The work will involve a combination of field sampling and rate process measurements, experimental manipulation of field and lab samples, microbial cultivation, and will heavily depend on high throughput sequencing (DNA and RNA) and bioinformatics analysis in addition to more classical microbial oceanographic methods.

Successful postdoc candidates must have completed their Ph.D. and have recent research experience and peer-reviewed first-authored publications (published or accepted) involving FIELD-COLLECTED native marine or lake/stream microorganisms (protists, bacteria, archaea, and/or viruses) studied as part of mixed communities from their natural habitat. Experience with cultured aquatic microorganisms is also useful, as is experience with experimental manipulation of freshly collected plankton samples. Candidates' personal skills and first-authored publications must include DNA and/or RNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis.

The TECHNICIAN position is for an individual with at least 5 years work experience with molecular biological analysis of microorganisms, strong quantitative and computer skills, ability to work independently, and preferably with experience (lab and field) in marine or freshwater microbial ecology. Duties will include DNA/RNA extraction and sequencing, bioinformatic sequence analysis, data processing, lab management, supervision of undergraduate lab assistants, field and laboratory experiments.

Much of the work for this project will be done at USC's Wrigley Marine Science Center on Santa Catalina Island.
