Postdoctoral Position in Shellfish Population Modeling
MATHEMATICAL MODELING OF OYSTER AND SURF CLAM POPULATIONS
A postdoctoral position is available immediately to participate in modeling
of the population dynamics and genetics of oysters and surf clams. Funding
is from the NSF Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems and the
Ecology of Infectious Disease Program. The modeling effort is directed at
(1) the interaction of phenotype and genotype in determining larval growth
and survival, (2) the investigation of the mechanisms for the development of
disease resistance in natural populations of shellfish, and (3) range shifts
and global warming. Target species are oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and
surf clams (Spisula solidissima). The projects are a multidisciplinary
program including participants from Rutgers University, Old Dominion
University, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and University of Southern
California. The appointment would be for two years.
We are looking for a motivated individual interested in focusing on the
implementation of numerical gene-based models of population dynamics. A PhD
in marine ecology, genetics or a related field is required. Someone who is
interested in expanding his/her expertise to numerical simulations of
real-world case histories with application to ecological and management
questions is especially welcome. Computer skills are required, with skills
in UNIX, matlab and Fortran work environments preffered. A solid background
in genetics and/or shellfish population dynamics is strongly preferred.
The Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory at Rutgers University offers an
extremely collaborative environment, with faculty in the field of genomics
(Ximing Guo), shellfish diseases (Susan Ford, Dave Bushek), numerical
modeling and shellfish management (Eric Powell), and shellfish biology (John
Kraeuter). Collaborative ties pertinent to the NSF programs include
biological and physical modelers (Eileen Hofmann -- ODU, John Klinck -- ODU,
Dale Haidvogel, RU), shellfish ecology (Roger Mann -- VIMS), and genetics
and breeding (Dennis Hedgecock -- USC).
Interested individuals should send a CV with contacts for three
references to Eric Powell at eric@hsrl.rutgers.edu. Informal inquiries
are welcome.
Applications will be reviewed as they arrive.
Rutgers University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
