Environmental Laboratory and Field Technician
Coastal Carolina University is accepting applications for the following position: Environmental Laboratory and Field Technician (Research Grant Specialist) in Coastal Carolina University’s Burroughs and Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies. Position is a full-time annual appointment with benefits. This position will work with the Center’s Environmental Quality Laboratory which serves the coastal and inland waters of northeastern South Carolina.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE: field sampling, sample processing and analysis, quality control procedures, instrument calibration and data management. The following parameters are routinely measured: bacteria, chlorophyll, nutrients, BOD5, organic carbon, turbidity, pH and alkalinity. Field measurements are made with in-situ meters. Applicants should be able to participate in research cruises, train others in sampling and analytical techniques, and interact effectively with staff, students and volunteers.
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in science and one (1) year related job experience. Master’s degree in science and (2) years related job experience preferred. Applicant will possess strong field, laboratory and computer skills. Must also maintain a valid SC driver's license and be a strong swimmer. Duties require excellent time management and organizational skills. Must be able to comprehend technical literature such as US EPA methods and to follow standard operating procedures. Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Word and Excel. Must be able to differentiate colors on bacterial plates. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, move and/or lift boxes and containers weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasional work after hours and on weekends may be required.
