Postdoctoral Researcher

POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLAR
The University of California invites applications for a
Postdoctoral Scholar with extensive molecular biology
experience for a position in the Department of Ocean
Sciences’ Microbial Environmental Genomics: Applications,
Modeling, Experimentation and Remote sensing (MEGAMER)
facility. The position is a collaborative effort between
researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC)
and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).
Under the direction of Professor Jonathan Zehr and Dr. Chris
Scholin, the successful candidate will conduct research
enabling the development of new applications for use on the
Environmental Sample Processor (ESP), a deployable,
electromechanical/fluidic system designed to collect discrete
water samples, concentrate microorganisms or particles, and
automate application of molecular probes which identify
microorganisms and their gene products
(http://www.mbari.org/ESP). The primary research objective
of this position will be to develop genetic probes for use on
the sandwich hybridization assay (SHA) and real-time PCR
modules aboard the ESP, each enabling assays to determine
microbial community composition and physiological status.
Furthermore, the successful candidate will work to create an
array based workflow for rapidly screening and selecting
useful probes. The successful candidate must be experienced
with these or similar molecular biology techniques. The
candidate may also be expected to participate in fieldwork.
RANK: Postdoctoral Scholar
SALARY RANGE: $45,024 – $55,464 annually, commensurate
with qualifications and experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or equivalent in biology,
microbiology, biochemistry or a related field, with strong
molecular biology skills. Candidate must be able to work
effectively independent of direct supervision and possess
strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal
skills. A background in marine microbiology is desired but
not required.
POSITION AVAILABLE: As soon as possible after the closing
date. Candidate must be available to interview within two
weeks of the closing date and must be available for work
within 45 days of the closing date.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: One year, full time, with additional
one year renewal(s), contingent upon the availability of
funding and a positive performance review.
