Junior Research Scientist / Post-Doc Positions in Algal/Cyanobacterial Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Genetics, Photosynthesis and Carbon Metabolism
Junior Research Scientist / Post-Doc Positions in Algal/Cyanobacterial Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Genetics, Photosynthesis and Carbon Metabolism Algenol Biofuels, Inc. is the leading 3rd generation Bio- ethanol company. Algenol is a privately held, industrial biotechnology company using cyanobacteria (blue green algae), natural selection, environmental selection, and the tools of molecular biology to produce low cost and environmentally safe biofuels. Algenol has developed a patented process for linking, inside an individual prokaryotic cell, the Calvin cycle with the enzymes required to make ethanol from simple carbohydrates. Algenol’s CAPTURES DIRECT TO ETHANOL TECHNOLOGY™ uses proprietary algae and production systems to convert large quantities of carbon dioxide directly into ethanol. Algenol completed financing of the company in 2007 and now in conjunction with our other research facilities, we are moving to commercialization of the technology. Algenol is opening and staffing a state-of-the- art research and development facility in Baltimore, MD. For the Laboratory Research Facility in Baltimore, Maryland, we are seeking to fill a number of full-time Research Scientist/post-doc position. The major task for these positions is planning and performing laboratory studies in biochemistry, analytical chemical analysis, and molecular genetics aimed at optimizing algal and cyanobacterial growth and ethanol production in photobioreactors for alternative fuel production, co-products, and by-products. Biochemistry/Analytical Chemistry: – work in areas of proteomics and metabolomics in cyanobacteria. Research tasks include biochemical and biophysical analysis of proteins (enzymes) and metabolites to evaluate metabolic-enhanced algal and cyanobacterial strains in relation to photobiological ethanol productivity and stability under various conditions. Ph.D. and experience in related field required. Molecular Biology: Algal and/or cyanobacterial molecular genetics. Work in areas of gene design, transformation, screening, and biochemical/biophysical analysis. Research tasks include gene design, transformation, screening, and biochemical and biophysical analysis to evaluate metabolically enhanced algal and cyanobacterial strains in relation to photobiological ethanol productivity and stability under various conditions. Ph.D. and experience in related field required. Photosynthetic energy transfer and carbon metabolism in cyanobacteria. Research tasks include analysis of metabolic pathways, mutant and gene characterization, development and implementation of transformation techniques. selection of algal strains for improved commercial characteristics, development of the protocol for metabolites analysis. The individual is expected to provide a high level of initiative and leadership. Ph.D. and 2+ years experience in related field required. Requirements: • Ph.D. or Doctorate in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biophysics, or comparable discipline, preferably with experience in algal molecular genetics, biochemistry, photobiology; post-doctoral experience in a related discipline with active research involvement and publications preferred. • Experience with algal/cyanobacterial molecular genetics, chemistry, physiology, biophysics, culture techniques, and modern lab techniques such as gene transformation and screening, metabolic chemical analysis, flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, enzyme assays, gene expression assays, are beneficial. • Self-motivated team-player, who can also work independently and self-reliantly with high and efficient productivity in a fast-paced scientific research environ¬ment. • Fluent and literate in English language and comfortable in writing scientific texts; comfortable in communicating with peers and leaders in efficient ways. • Familiar and experienced with general lab practices, scientific equipment, multifactorial experiment design, project planning and management, and statistical data analysis. • Eligible to work in the United States. Compensation: • An ideal candidate would be offered a competitive salary between $75,000 – $90,000 commensurate with experience. This would be complimented by a generous performance- based bonus and stock award program. • Benefits include Medical insurance and annual vacation.
