Research Assistant – Marine Microbiology
Join our world-class research team in Hawaii to develop biofuels from marine phytoplankton.
Your responsibilities: Assemble, operate, and maintain microalgae cultivation systems ranging from standard laboratory batch cultures to large-scale photobioreactors and ponds. Take, prepare and analyze samples for determinations of microalgae productivity and biochemical composition; record data. Prepare growth media, process microalgal biomass, store and document inventory.
Your qualifications:
Education: BS in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related fields.
Experience: One to three (1-3) years experience in single cell or plant tissue culture and/or biochemical analysis of microbial particulates. Experience in the application of sterile technique. Operation and care of standard microbiological laboratory equipment, including autoclaves, microscopes, analytical microbalances, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, etc.
Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of microbial physiology, biochemistry and/or inorganic chemistry of seawater. Ability to analyze and solve problems in a collaborative environment. Excellent skills at personal organization and general laboratory practices. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, coupled with a sense of urgency and the ability to work under tight deadlines.
Most desirable: Research experience on photosynthesis, physiology, taxonomy, and production dynamics of marine phytoplankton. Experience with cultivation of phytoplankton, especially in photobioreactors at large-scale, is a distinct plus.
