Post-doc in Antarctic Oceanography
The Palmer Long-Term Ecological Research (PAL LTER) program seeks an outstanding individual for a two year post-doctoral position to carry out interdisciplinary research focused on understanding the marine ecosystem of the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) region. The WAP region is a premier example of a climate-sensitive region experiencing major changes in community structure due to changes in species ranges, abundance and distribution that are occurring in response to regional climate change. An important goal of our program is to understand the full implications of, and mechanisms underlying, climate variability and ecological response. Interdisciplinary components currently within the Pal LTER include: physical and biological oceanography, remote sensing and bio-optics, microbes and organic biogeochemistry, phytoplankton dynamics, zooplankton and micronekton, sea birds as well as synthesis and modeling.
Essential qualifications include a Ph.D. in marine science or a closely related field with expertise in optics and/or remote sensing. Experience carrying out research making use of satellite microwave, visible & IR and/or in-water optical sensors on moorings, autonomous vehicles, etc. is especially valuable. The successful applicant is expected to pursue collaborative and independent research with PAL LTER scientists making use of state-of-the-art remote sensing tools for the integration of these various components in carrying out our research objectives.
* It is anticipated that in carrying out these research activities the successful applicant may spend time at several of the PAL PI institutions which include: University of California-Santa Barbara, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, VIMS, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the Polar Oceans Research Group (Montana, summers only). Field work at Palmer Station and/or aboard research icebreakers is also possible.
Review of documents will continue until the position is filled.
