- Students need to be introduced to the diversity and identification of organisms inhabiting freshwater systems. Traditionally such instruction is accomplished in university classes using teaching collections of preserved specimens. Unfortunately, many teachers are unable to use this teaching technique because they lack access to preserved teaching collections and/or lack training in organism identification. In this Teaching Tool, I share a novel approach to teaching undergraduate students about the identification and environmental problems confronting fishes in Texas.
