The Tommy and Yvette Edmondson Distinguished Service Award recognizes members who have displayed exceptional efforts that support the professional goals and enhance the stature of ASLO. Dr. John Dolan, Director of Research at the Observatoire Océanologique de Villefranche-sur-Mer, is the 2016 recipient of the Tommy and Yvette Edmonson Service Award in recognition of his outstanding and extended contributions to the L&O Bulletin and to ASLO through his overall service. The award will be presented at the 2016 Ocean Sciences Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, February 21-26, 2016.
John Dolan served as co-editor of the Limnology & Oceanography Bulletin, the primary communications journal for the society, from 2007-2015. During his tenure, John strove to transform the Bulletin into a visually appealing ‘must-read’. A long-time ASLO member, John Dolan is a historian of the fields of limnology and oceanography. Through John’s hard work, Bulletin readers were treated to artistic covers and dozens of articles on the people, places, and ideas of limnology and oceanography.
Content and pages in the Bulletin increased by nearly 50% during John’s editorship. John was also instrumental in transitioning the Bulletin to a new submission, editing and publishing platform in late 2014 when Wiley became ASLO’s publishing partner.
John retired from the position of Bulletin co-editor in late 2015. In nominating him, John’s long-time co-editor Adrienne Sponberg said, "It is difficult to bid adieu to my steadfast partner for the Bulletin. John worked tirelessly on the Bulletin, motivated by his love of the fields of limnology and oceanography and a desire to connect the members - to each other, to the past through historical reviews and biographies, and to the future by soliciting pieces on new ideas that could transform how members think and do their work." ASLO President Jim Elser praised Dolan's service to ASLO, noting, "John is a terrific scientist who also found time to serve his discipline. On multiple occasions John Dolan went above and beyond the call of duty, often times unnoticed because of his unassuming nature. We are pleased to recognize his extraordinary efforts and commitment with the Yvette and Tommy Edmonson Distinguished Service Award."
