Limnology and Oceanography: Environments and Fluids
Request for Applications for Advisory Board
A new journal will soon join the ASLO family of outstanding, high-impact journals. The new journal, with a current working title of: Limnology and Oceanography: Environments and Fluids, will examine the field of environmental fluid dynamics and aquatic systems processes, i.e. how fluid physical processes interact with aquatic system biology, chemistry, and geology.
We are seeking motivated individuals interested in joining the Advisory Board, a group of distinguished scientists who will be charged with: 1) defining the scope of the journal; 2) developing a panel of Associate Editors; and 3) developing and recommending editorial policies and practices, all in consultation with the new Editor. Advisory Board members will be expected to contribute substantial effort toward these goals, particularly during the early start-up of the journal. The Editor and Advisory Board together will guide the journal's creation and development, and will lay the groundwork for a highly interdisciplinary journal that will match and enhance the reputation of ASLO's existing Limnology and Oceanography journal family. Funding for the new journal has been secured via partnership with Duke University Press (a not-for-profit, full-service, university-based publisher), and the new Editor and Advisory Board will not be involved in fund-raising. The Editor will be expected to interact with the ASLO Board of Directors regularly and to attend twice-yearly Board meetings. The Editor can expect to devote significant time to the journal, especially during the start-up phase, and will receive a modest honorarium.
Members of the Advisory Board should have editorial experience and expertise in the areas of fluid and material transport as they relate to biological and chemical processes. This field of expertise is intended in the broadest sense and may apply to any number of aspects dealing with marine or freshwater physics/hydrodynamics, modeling, (bio)mechanics and biogeochemical processes. Applicants should provide: 1) current CV, 2) cover letter explaining their interest in joining the Advisory Board and why they think such a journal is needed, and 3) brief statement regarding their vision for the journal and what subdiscipline they could contribute to in order to ensure that this vision is met.
Finally, applicants for the Advisory Board may express interest in becoming the new Editor. The ASLO Board of Directors will select the founding Editor from among Advisory Board members who have expressed such interest. Interested individuals are cautioned that the Editor will be expected to devote considerably more time to the journal than Advisory Board members. For further information regarding the journal, contact the Chair of the search committee (Jim McManus, mcmanus@coas.oregonstate.edu) and for additional information on the level of effort required to start a new journal, please contact Limnology and Oceanography: Methods Editor Paul Kemp (lomethods-editor@aslo.org).
Applications should be sent via email to efsearch@aslo.org, and will be reviewed by the search committee on an ongoing basis. The search committee recommendation to the ASLO Board of Directors regarding the new Advisory Board and Editor is expected in early March.
